The Do’s and Don’ts of Wearing Denim Jeans

The Do’s and Don’ts of Wearing Denim Jeans

There’s no denying the fact that jeans are a popular choice of pants. Worn by both men and women alike, they’ve been around for nearly a century — and there’s no sign of this trend slowing down anytime soon. On the contrary, more and more people are adding jeans to their wardrobe. It’s a versatile, durable and stylish garment that’s perfect for men and women of all ages. But if you want to get the most use out of your jeans, you should follow the tips listed below. Here are some essential “do’s” and “don’ts” of wearing denim jeans.

Do Wear a Belt

Some people assume that belts are only necessary if your jeans tend to fall down. While belts certainly help in this regards, they also add a unique style to your outfit, bringing color and geometric lines to your appearance. So, whether your jeans fall down or stay on your waist, you should wear a belt with them.

Don’t Wear a Belt in the Same Color as Your Jeans

But you should avoid wearing a belt in the same color as your jeans. If your jeans are black and you wear a black belt, it will appear as if you aren’t wearing a belt; thus, your belt isn’t going to offer any real aesthetic benefit. Instead, choose a belt in either a contrasting color or a slightly different color as your jeans. You want people to see your belt, which is why a contrasting color works well.

Don’t Wear Baggy Jeans

Maybe they were popular when you were in high school. Today, however, baggy jeans are a poor choice due to the unflattering way in which they affect a person’s appearance. Unless you’re working in the yard, you really shouldn’t wear baggy jeans. Granted, you can still choose “relaxed” and “loose” fit jeans, both of which are perfectly acceptable, but it’s best to avoid excessively baggy jeans with hanging fabric at the bottom. Not only are they unattractive, but the excess fabric may drag across the ground, causing them to wear and deteriorate more quickly.

Do Wear the Right Shoes

It’s important to choose the right shoes/footwear when sporting denim jeans. One of the great things about jeans is the near-limitless number of options it allows when choosing shoes. You can pair your jeans with open-toed sandals, high-heels, boots, sneakers and more. Ultimately, your choice of shoes will depend on the occasion during which the jeans will be worn. If you’re headed to the beach, then perhaps you should stick with some summer-appropriate footwear options like sandals. But if you’re going to dinner with friends and family, choose a “closed” shoe type.

Don’t Wash Your Jeans After Each Use

We’ve talked about this before on our blog, but it’s worth mentioning again that you should avoid washing your jeans after each use. Denim jeans are among the most rugged and durable style of pants on the market. When made of 100% genuine denim, they will last for countless years. With that said, however, even jeans will degrade over time, especially when washed in the washing machine after each use. You can protect against unnecessary wear by washing your jeans only when they are visibly dirty. If you notice a small spot on your jeans, use a damp washcloth to clean it. And when your jeans are visibly dirty, go ahead and place them in the washing machine. Not only will this prolong the life of your jeans, but it also save water/power by cutting down on the number of times you use your washing machine.

Do Choose the Right Size

Of course, you should only wear jeans if they are properly designed to fit your body. Being that no two people have the exact same body shape or size, this isn’t always an easy task. You can visit countless retail and department stores, only to leave empty-handed. If this sounds like a familiar scenario, consider ordering your jeans from the denim experts here at MakeYourOwnJeans. We offer custom sizing on all of your jeans at no additional charge. You’ll have the option to specify your body measurements when ordering, and we’ll use those measurements to create the perfect fit.

Don’t Leave Your Jeans in the Washing Machine

When you do wash your jeans, be sure to transfer them to the dryer immediately after they are finished washing. Allowing your jeans to sit in the washing machine for hours (or days) may change the way in which they fit. The water-soaked denim will become soggy, which can also lead to the production of mildew. However, you can easily avoid problems such as these by transferring your jeans to the clothes dryer immediately or shortly after they are finished washing.

Do Consider the Material

Denim isn’t the only material used to make jeans. Thanks to advancements in textile manufacturing and the apparel industry as a whole, companies are now producing jeans with other materials as well. Stretch jeans, for instance, are typically made with a combination of denim and some other elastic material, such as polyester or Spandex. Adding just 10% polyester or Spandex gives the jeans greater elasticity. Double-check the tag to see what materials the jeans are made of before buying them. If you want stretch jeans, you should avoid 100% denim, opting for a combo of denim and an elastic material instead.

Don’t Allow Your Jeans to Drag on the Ground

Regardless of which style you choose, you should make sure your jeans do NOT drag on the ground. It’s not uncommon for the bottom of jeans to drag on the ground, especially when they are too big. While a single instance of this shouldn’t cause any reason for concern, allowing your jeans to drag on the ground day after day will likely damage the fabric, resulting in permanent fraying and wear.

These are just a few do’s and don’ts to follow when wearing denim jeans. For more tips, check out our previous blog posts here at MakeYourOwnJeans.
