How to Wear Black Jeans

How to Wear Black Jeans

Tired of wearing the same indigo-colored jeans day after day? While there’s certainly nothing wrong with wearing traditional colors such as indigo and navy, denim is available in dozens of other colors as well, including black. Black jeans can open the doors to a whole new world of fashion possibilities. Whether you are going out for drinks with friends, running errands around town, or even attending a semi-formal event, black jeans offer the perfect combination of style and comfort. Skinny or Straight-Leg Jeans When choosing a pair of black jeans, consider the cut and how it will impact your appearance. Skinny and straight-leg cuts are generally the preferred choice for black jeans, simply because the dark color enhances the wearer’s appearance to make him or her appear thinner. Of course, the cut is ultimately a personal preference, so don’t feel like you must choose between either skinny or straight-leg. Feel free to try on several different cuts to see what works and what doesn’t. Don’t Wear Brown! If you are going to wear black jeans, be sure to avoid wearing ANY brown in your outfit. This includes your shirt, shoes, belt, and other accessories. Going back to the basics of fashion 101, brown and black do not mix. You can wear either brown or black, but you cannot wear them together — not if you want to look good, at least. So be sure to check your outfit to ensure it doesn’t contain any brown when wearing black jeans. What About the Shoes? Don’t make the mistakes of wearing black shoes with black jeans. This may seem harmless enough,...
The Growing Trend of ‘Fast Fashion’

The Growing Trend of ‘Fast Fashion’

There’s been a growing trend towards the inexpensive clothes in recent years, highlighted by some of the nation’s largest retailers. Known as “fast fashion,” it allows consumers to purchase more clothes without breaking the bank. But what’s causing this trend? And how long will it last? According to a recent report published by American Apparel, the average U.S. adult will purchase roughly 70 new garments this year, up from just 40 in 1991 and 62 in 2012. Men and women alike are paying more attention to what they wear, diversifying their wardrobes while staying on top of the latest fashion trends. Of course, in order to remain stylish, Americans must invest heavily in new clothes, which is something that we’re seen more of. Here’s the kicker, though: many people are choosing inexpensive, readily available garments over premium garments. One possible reason for this trend may lie in the overseas retailer Primark, which as annual sales increase by 17% in 2014 from the year prior. Primark is constantly adding cheap, new garments to its lineup, offering a wide selection to its target demographic of 20-30 year olds. As noted by Jamie Merriman of Bernstein, consumers often choose Primark because it’s like the “Costco” of retail shopping, meaning they can purchase everything from clothes and shoes to groceries and household cleaning supplies. “Consumers shop at Primark differently than they shop at a lot of retailers,” says Bernstein’s Jamie Merriman. “It’s almost like shopping at a Costco,”—which sells buckets of peanuts and vats of detergent—“where you’re thinking about it in terms of volume.” Another reason why many consumers are choosing fast fashion...
Fashion Tips for Everyday Women

Fashion Tips for Everyday Women

Trying to find the right clothes to wear can be a downright difficult to task. Whether you’re going to work, out to dinner with friends, a business event, or just running errands around town, you want to look your best. There’s always the chance that you’ll run into a long-lost friend whom you haven’t seen in years, which is one of the many reasons why you should dress appropriately for the occasion. So today we’re going to reveal some simple yet effective fashion tips for everyday women. Dress in Layers Some women assume the “dressing in layers” tip only works during the cold winter months, but this isn’t necessarily true. If you work in an office, for instance, you can wear a light cardigan over your shirt for an additional layer of clothing. If you begin to feel hot, you can always remove your cardigan for instant comfort. Of course, this is just one of the many ways in which dressing in layers can prove useful, so feel free to experiment with other layered clothing options as well. One-of-a-Kind Looks If you really want to set yourself apart from the rest of the fashion world, strive for one-of-a-kind looks. I know this is easier said than done, especially considering the countless number of styles out there, but try to create a look that’s entirely yours to own. Be warned, though, you should only attempt this process if you aren’t afraid of failing. Some of your one-of-a-kind outfits may look fabulous, but others may end up on the opposite end of the spectrum. It takes trial and error to find...
Fun Facts About Denim Jeans

Fun Facts About Denim Jeans

Why Jeans are White on The Inside Ever wonder why denim jeans are white on the inside but colored (usually indigo) on the outside? This is due to the fact that only the warp fabric is dyed, while the weft fabric remains while. So when jeans are produced — with the weft fabric being used on the interior — it creates this phenomenon. Keep in mind that some companies dye both the warp and weft fabric, but you’ll generally find that most jeans only have the warp fabric dyed. Stretch Denim Has 15% Greater Elasticity Unless you’ve worn a pair of stretch denim jeans before, you might be surprised to learn just how “stretchy” they really are. According to some reports, a typical pair of stretch jeans has up to 15% greater elasticity than non-stretch denim. Stretch denim contains a small percentage of spandex (usually about 3%) to give it this unique characteristic. Even though it looks like standard denim, the presence of spandex allows it to stretch far beyond its normal capabilities. Jeans Were Invented in the 17th Century It’s unknown who exactly was responsible for inventing denim jeans. Some people have credited Levi Strauss with this accomplish, but the general belief is that he didn’t invent the jeans. Instead, historians believe jeans originated out of France during the 17th century. This was a time when textile production was booming, and denim seemed to be the most popular choice of fabric for pants. The trend continued, and even spread through nearby countries, at which point denim jeans become the staple choice of pants for both men and women....
Happy Birthday Blue Jeans?

Happy Birthday Blue Jeans?

May 20 isn’t just another ‘spring’ day. It’s also the birthdate of blue jeans (we’re not kidding). Exactly 142 years ago to this day, Levi Strauss and his business partner Jacob Davis were granted a patent for copper-riveted trousers, which later became known as blue jeans. This sparked a growing trend in which men and women of all ages were eager to buy and wear blue jeans. Blue jeans are now the most commonly worn type of pants in the world, and for good reason: they are comfortable, stylish, durable, and can be worn for a variety of different occasions. You can even dress up a pair of jeans for formal occasions simply by pairing them with the right shirt, jacket and pair of shoes. But let’s take a few steps back to reflect blue jeans and how they came to be such as iconic fashion item. Levi Strauss — the proclaimed inventor of the blue jeans — wasn’t some experienced fashion designer, nor did have any special garment-making skills. Instead, he was a savvy businessman and entrepreneur, which he expressed by capitalizing on California’s Gold Rush. Strauss opened a small shop in which he sold supplies to gold prospectors. Reports indicate that one of Strauss’ customers, Jacob Davis, often purchased cloth fabric to make trousers for railroad workers. These trousers were stronger and more durable than other trousers, allowing them to stand up under the stress of railroad work. Here’s the problem, though: Davis didn’t have the time nor the financial means to continue producing these trousers, so approached Strauss with a proposition: the two would patent Davis’...
