10 Easy Ways to Improve the Appearance of Your Jeans

Worn by men and women of all ages and backgrounds, jeans are the world’s most popular type of pants. Constructed out of denim, they are strong and durable yet also soft and comfortable. These unique properties offer a superior level of performance that’s not found in other pants. But because so many people wear jeans, creating a unique style is often difficult. In this post, we’re going to reveal 10 easy ways to improve the appearance of your jeans. By taking advantage of these tips, you’ll create a unique style that compliments your body as well as the rest of your outfit.

#1) Choose Selvedge Denim Jeans

Selvedge denim jeans have become a hot trend in recent years. They are designed with several inches of denim fabric folded up and sew into the bottom of the legs. Because the underside of denim has a lighter tone than the outer side, selvedge denim jeans offer a uniquely stylish appearance.

#2) Make Sure They Fit

Whether you choose selvedge or traditional denim jeans, you should make sure they fit. If they are too big or too small, they won’t help you create a stylish appearance. While you may get lucky by finding the perfect pair of fitted jeans at a local department store, we make the process a little easier by offering custom sizing on all our jeans. When you order from MakeYourOwnJeans, you can specify your measurements, and we’ll use those measurements to design the perfect pair of fitted jeans for you.

#3) Pair It With a Denim Jacket

Another way to improve the appearance of your jeans is to pair it with a denim jacket. Denim jackets are made of the same denim fabric as jeans, so these two garments naturally compliment each other. And best of all, denim jackets are appropriate to wear year-round. From spring and summer to fall and winter, you can comfortably wear a denim jacket during any time of the year.

#4) Wear a Belt

Even if your jeans fit properly and don’t fall down, consider wearing a belt with them. This common accessory will add new color to your outfit while also defining your waistline in the process. The key thing to remember, however, is that you need to wear a belt in a color that flows with your jeans. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the exact same color. Rather, choose a belt in a color that compliments your jeans. Black belts work well for most jeans, but alternative belt colors to consider include red, white, gray or even yellow.

#5) Preserve the Original Color

Jeans, like most garments, have a tendency to fade over time. A pair of jeans that were once indigo blue may fade to a light blue color after a year or so. You can still wear faded jeans such as this, but they won’t offer the same bold color as they used to. To discourage your jeans from fading, turn them inside out when you wash them. It only takes a few minutes to flip your jeans inside out, but doing so will protect them from fading. Additionally, you can wash your jeans with 1 cup vinegar to further protect them from fading. Vinegar has natural color-protectant properties to preserve the original color of your jeans.

#6) Keep Them Off the Ground

Do the bottom of your jeans drag on the ground when you wear them? If so, you can expect the denim fabric to unravel and degrade over time. This usually happens when jeans are too long. If you wear jeans that are too big for your body, the bottom of the pants may drag on the ground. Ideally, you should wear jeans in the right size to avoid this problem. But if you already own a pair of oversized jeans, try wearing shoes with a taller heel to keep them from dragging on the ground.

#7) Wear the Right Shoes

Shoes can make a big impact on the appearance of your jeans. You don’t have to necessarily wear formal shoes with jeans, but you should choose shoes that flow with the overall color and style of your jeans. If your shoes don’t match your jeans, you’ll struggle to create an attractive, cohesive outfit.  How do you know if your shoes match? Well, they should feature a color and style that’s similar to that of your jeans.

#8) Iron Them

Jeans are more resistant to wrinkles than other types of pants, but they still can still develop wrinkles. If you discover that your jeans are wrinkled, use a steam iron to press them. Running over the surface just once with a hot iron should eliminate most major wrinkles. And once the wrinkles are gone, your jeans will look cleaner and more attractive. When ironing your jeans, start with the lowest heat setting to reduce the risk of scorching the denim fabric.

#9) Spot Treat Stains

Try not to panic if you discover a stain on your jeans. Washing the jeans in water and detergent should remove it, though you can also spot treat the stained area. There are countless cleaning products designed specifically for spot treating stains. Some are sold in spray bottles, whereas others consist of stain-removing wipes. Regardless, these products make it easy to clean stains. When you find a stain on your jeans, just spot treat it using the product. This allows you to continue wearing the jeans without having to take them off and wash them.

#10) Use a Lint Roller

Jeans, like most clothes, have a tendency to attract lint, hair and dust. If you’re among the millions of people who own a dog or cat, you’ll probably discover pet hair on your jeans. The good news is that you can easily remove pet hair, lint, dust and other debris from your jeans by using a lint roller. This handheld tool essentially consists of a roll of tape that catches debris. Just roll the lint roller over your jeans to instantly clean the surface and improve their appearance.
