How to Choose Denim Shorts

How to Choose Denim Shorts

When shopping for denim shorts, there are several things you should consider. All denim shorts are made of denim. With their denim construction, they are durable, soft and long-lasting. But not all denim shorts are the same. There are different types of denim shorts. If you’re going to spend your hard-earned money on a pair of denim shorts, you should choose the right type. Here are nine things to consider when choosing denim shorts.

#1) Number of Pockets

You should consider the number of pockets when choosing denim shorts. Most denim shorts feature the same pocket configuration as a typical pair of jeans: They have five pockets, including two main front pockets, two main back pockets and a smaller “watch pocket” inside one of the front pockets.

Other denim shorts may feature a different pocket configuration. Some denim shorts, for example, only have four pockets. They don’t have a “watch pocket.” Instead, they only have the two main pockets in the front and the two main pockets in the back.

#2) Dry vs Washed Denim

While they are all made of denim — just like jeans — denim shorts are available in different types of denim. Some of them are made of dry denim, whereas others are made of washed denim. Denim is classified as dry or washed depending on how it was made. Dry denim isn’t washed during production. Conversely, washed denim is washed during production. You’ll need to choose between dry and washed denim when shopping for a pair of denim shorts.

Denim shorts made of washed denim offer several advantages over those made of dry denim. Here are a few of the top reasons to go with washed denim:

  • Pre-shrunk
  • Protected from fading
  • Ultra-soft texture
  • Naturally aged appearance

#3) Length

Don’t forget to consider the length when choosing denim shorts. You can find them in different lengths. Some denim shorts are longer than others, in which case they’ll cover more of your legs. But if you’re planning to wear them during the summer months, you may want to avoid long-length denim shorts. Regardless, you’ll need to consider the length when choosing denim shorts. The length will affect their appearance and their comfort when worn.

#4) Denim Composition

What’s the composition of the denim? The term “denim” refers to any cotton-based textile in which the weft goes under two or more warp threads. Most denim shorts are made of 100% cotton denim, but others are made of cotton and an elastic material. Denim shorts made of cotton and an elastic material are stretchy. The combination of cotton and an elastic material is known as stretch denim.

There are denim shorts made of stretch denim. You can identify them by their composition. While ordinary denim shorts are made of 100% cotton, stretch denim shorts are made of about 97% cotton and 3% elastic material.

Stretch denim is the same as regular denim; the only difference is that it contains a small amount of an elastic material. Elastic materials can consist of lycra or polyester. A typical pair of stretch denim shorts are constructed of about 97% denim and 3% lycra or polyester. With an elastic material, they are stretchier than ordinary denim shorts.

#5) Fly Type

Denim shorts are available in different fly types. The fly, of course, is found on the front of a pair of denim shorts. It features fasteners that you can use to put on or take off the denim shorts.

There are two primary types of flies: buttons and zippers. Of those two types, zippers are the most common. Most denim shorts feature a zipper on the front, which you can pull up or pull down. With that said, other denim shorts may feature a column of buttons. If you’re going to buy a pair of denim shorts, you should consider the fly type. Make sure the denim shorts feature your preferred type of fly.

#6) Pocket Lining

If you order a pair of denim shorts from MakeYourOwnJeans, you should consider the pocket lining. It consists of a layer of material that’s added to the interior of the pockets. All denim shorts have pocket lining. However, you aren’t limited to choosing the default pocket lining; you can choose a different, more stylish type of pocket lining.

Some of the pocket lining types available at MakeYourOwnJeans include denim blue chambray, gray multistripe, navy herringbone, filafil poplene aqua, roman checks and more. These alternative pocket lining types will enhance your denim shorts with a unique aesthetic element.

#7) Color

Denim shorts are available in other colors besides blue. Blue denim shorts are undoubtedly popular. Blue is synonymous with denim. After all, jeans are often referred to as “blue jeans.” Rather than blue, though, you may want to choose denim shorts in an alternative color.

Denim can be dyed in just about any color. Maybe you prefer gray, or perhaps you prefer khaki. Regardless, you can find denim shorts in many other colors besides blue. Choosing denim shorts in an alternative color will open the doors to new outfit combinations, some of which may not be possible with blue denim shorts.

#8) Denim Weight

You should check the weight of the denim when choosing denim shorts. The weight may vary depending on the particular type of denim shorts. Some denim shorts are made of heavier denim than others. With heavyweight denim, they are typically thicker and, thus, warmer than their counterparts. Other denim shorts are made of lighter denim. They weigh less than their heavyweight counterparts while offering a thinner construction.

#9) The Fit

Last but certainly not least, you should consider the fit when choosing denim shorts. They need to fit correctly in the waist. Otherwise, you probably won’t wear them. If they are too small, the denim shorts may not fit around your waist. If they are too big, they may look baggy. You can avoid these problems by choosing denim shorts in the right size for your body.
